Unprepared hikers rescued in White Mountains

FRANCONIA, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire authorities say two Massachusetts hikers who got lost in the White Mountains were carrying almost no useful gear or supplies.
Fish and Game officials say the hikers from Winthrop and Allston walked past the trail they planned to take Saturday and ended up on the Garfield Ridge Trail near the Skookumchuck Trail in Franconia. They called 911 Saturday night, and conservation officers were able to locate them around 10:45 p.m. and guide them to safety.
Authorities say the pair were dressed in shorts and t-shirts, and were unprepared to stay overnight. Among other items, they failed to bring a map, compass, extra clothing or enough food or water.
