Students to race each other on boats built for project
RYE, N.H. (AP) — Students in New Hampshire who spent a year building boats in a school workshop are set to race their creations this week in a first-ever regatta.
Four grades of students at Rye Junior High each made two boats during the past year as a part of a program that combined woodworking instruction with a history of local harbors. The Portsmouth Herald reports the culmination of the program will be Thursday’s Rye Rowing Regatta in Rye Harbor where three teams of students will have a rowing competition.
After the race, everyone will meet at the junior high for a community barbecue. One of the boats will be raffled off and the other five will be auctioned to raise money for future projects.
