Pinkerton subdues Souhegan boys lacrosse

AMHERST – All the early-evening rain seemed to do was anger defending Division I boys lacrosse state champion Pinkerton Academy.

The Astros, now 7-3, stormed to a 16-2 halftime lead and never wavered, knocking off the host Sabers, 19-7.

For Souhegan coach Keith Bertrand, getting the game and the accompanying lesson in after so many postponements was a good thing.

“At least we got the game in,” said Bertrand. “I think most everything else (statewide) was cancelled. To be honest, I’m glad this game is done with. We played well in spots, but we don’t have the depth they do, obviously.

Now, the 4-5 Sabers have to recalibrate with a couple days of practice to fix the flaws before embarking on a stretch of eight games in 15 days, starting with Friday night’s home date with 1-6 Nashua North.

“We’re looking forward to correcting the mistakes we made tonight and getting better next time out,” said Bertrand.

Curtis Redd had both first-half goals for Souhegan but spent the entire second half on the bench with an ice-pack on his thigh.

The Sabers did some quality offensive work with five second-half goals, but much of that was against the Pinkerton substitutes.

Tyler Hall scored twice, and Will Boyle, Riley Lawhorn and Nick Jordan each had single goals.

The first half, as often is the case, was all about keep-away with Pinkerton scoring and faceoff sensation Gennaro Mara winning the ball back repeatedly, without a loss in the circle.

“We started pretty well, but then it’s hard,” said Bertrand. They have a great faceoff guy. And when they’re scoring and playing make-it-take-it, it puts a significant amount of pressure on our defense. But my guys battled to the very end, and I’m proud of that.”

The road should get a bit more comfortable as Souhegan attempts to make its push to the playoffs. Bishiop Guertin, Exeter, Division I juggernaut Derryfield and now Pinkerton are all in the rear-view mirror.

“There are a lot of games left to be played, and we’re in good shape (playoff-wise),” Bertrand said. We’ve played probably the fourth toughest schedule (in Division I). We’ve been tested.

“Iron sharpens iron. We will learn from these games and get back at it. The kids are focussed. They see the schedule. They know what’s going on. Hopefully we can get some momentum going forward and get on a win streak.”
