Nashua and Hudson have never really aspired to be known as the buried-asbestos capitals of New Hampshire, but any doubt about that unofficial title was dispelled last week when the state chose Nashua City Hall as the site of a hearing on asbestos site rules. “It was deemed suitable to hold the hearing there, since most of the asbestos disposal sites in New Hampshire are in those two communities,” said Laura Kieronski of the Solid Waste Bureau in the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services.

NASHUA – When a Nashua detective took the witness stand to testify against accused child molester Jose Hernandez, he wore a piece of clothing more commonly worn by a burglar or stickup artist: a ski mask. The detective was testifying at Hillsborough County Superior Court about a confession he took from Hernandez, who stood accused of raping and molesting a 12-year-old girl in September 2007.

NASHUA – Without a peep of public opposition, the Planning Board approved a proposal to build a new, 46,000-square foot facility for the YMCA of Greater Nashua near Stellos Stadium on Riverside Street. No one appeared before the board Thursday to express concern about the plan, which calls for construction of a two-story facility to begin early next year and be finished in 2011.

The state’s first series of free public clinics offering the H1N1 swine flu vaccine will begin next week, but a five-hour event at the Manchester Health Department on Tuesday will be the closest to Nashua. The H1N1 vaccine is taken considerably longer to produce that had originally been expected.
