KidSports April 15 Wrapup: Mite hockey, summer camp sign-ups
Nashua Panthers 1 repeats as South National AAA champs
The Panthers Mite 1 beat a fast-skating Danvers (Mass.) squad 5-1 to win this year’s Mite South National AAA championship in the Valley Hockey League.
The title run began with a 4-3 win over rival Nashoba in a heart-pounding shootout that went three rounds and featured 12 shooters. That was followed by a 9-4 drubbing of Twin City and the title game victory over Danvers.
The final game was a defensive battle until Daniel Woodford set up Corey Girouard twice in the last four minutes of the second period. The third period was all Panthers, with Dominic Carozza scoring twice and Sean Morrissey once. Dylan Troiano had two assists and Ben Zeichick earned one.
Goaltender Matt Licata, who was acquired just before the trade deadline, preserved Nashua’s chances with incredible saves on multiple occasions. Forward Brooke Yabroudy impressed with her hard fore-checking, and the defensive unit of Troiano, Brian Chisholm, Joey Pillsbury and Sam Clauson continually frustrated the opposing attack with tight protection of their net. This is the second consecutive year that the Panthers Mite 1 team has come away with the title.
