Defenders Watch

SATURDAY: Jabe Bergeron broke a 5-5 tie in the seventh inning with a solo blast, his first home run of the season, which held up as the eventual game-winning run in a 7-5 win over the Sussex Skyhawks at Holman Stadium.

BALL DAY: The homestand winds down today at 5:05 p.m. with Ball Day. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a Defenders logo baseball. The team hits the road after an off-day Monday for three games in Quebec against the Capitales and four more in New Jersey against the Jackals, who hold a five-game lead in the Can-Am League standings. Today is the team’s final home game of the first half, which ends July 13.

FOURTH ON THE FOURTH: The Defenders, who were last in the Can-Am League in hitting for a good portion of the season, went into Saturday’s game all the way up to fourth, hitting .274, one point ahead of Quebec and four points ahead of sixth-ranked Worcester.

HERE’S THE PITCH: Local product Isaac Burkett (3-3, 5.91) takes the mound today against Sussex Skyhawks righty Carter Clements (1-2, 2.93).

HOT HITTER: Edward Ovalle, who tripled in a run and reached base three times during Saturday’s 7-5 win over Sussex, went into the game hitting .313 with a pair of homers and six RBIs over his last 10 games.
