Nashua PAL boxers take Golden Gloves championships
The Nashua Police Athletic League Boxing program just concluded its finest performance ever in the recent New England Golden Gloves Tournament.
Three athletes each won the Central New England Golden Gloves Championship while two went on to capture the overall New England Title. Jesse Batanda of Nashua won the 178-pound Novice Division Central New England title, thentook the overall Novice Division New England crown.
Joseph Valdes of Amherst and Mike Fontanez of Nashua competed in the Open Division (boxers with more than 10 bouts) and won Central New England titles. Fontanez also was named the Outstanding Boxer of the entire tournament. Both athletes competed in the overall New England Open Division Golden Gloves Tournament. Valdes, in the 123-pound weight class, lost in a close bout against the eventual champ, Felix Parilla, out of New Haven, Conn. Fontanez, the 165-pound entry, went undefeated throughout the tournament captured the overall New England Open Division Championship with a 3-2 split decision victory over Victor Reynoso of Providence, R.I.
Fontanez now continues on to compete in the National Golden Gloves Tournament in Omaha, Neb., in May.
The Nashua PAL Team was led by head trainer Muhammad Brooks and Nashua PAL gym manager Frank Chimento.
The Nashua Senior Softball League is seeking players for the season scheduled to start with practices in mid-Apriul and the regular season in May.
Membership is open to all seniors age 60 and older and all skillÂ levels.
Games are played on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings at Yudicky Field in Nashua.
