Long ball propels Silver Knights past Mavericks, 13-9
PORTSMOUTH – The home run may have cost the Nashua Silver Knights in their season opener at Leary Field, but it helped them win in their second road game versus the Seacoast Mavericks on Sunday.
Ben Bengston hit a three-run homer in the third while Tyler Schwanz smacked a grand slam a couple of innings later as the Silver Knights held on to top the Mavericks, 13-9.
Bengston was the only multiple hitter in Nashua’s 12-hit attack as the Silver Knights are now 2-1 on the year. He went 3 for 5, reaching base four times, while scoring two runs.
His homer off Mavs starter and loser Ryan Ricci tied the game in the third. Nashua pushed two across in the fourth to take a 5-3 lead before Schwanz’s grand slam highlighted an eight-run fifth inning for a 13-3 lead.
Seacoast scored two in the eighth and four in the ninth off the Nashua bullpen to make things interesting. Clay Conaway picked up the win for the Silver Knights, allowing three runs on three hits over five innings, walking four with no strikeouts.
The Silver Knights travel to Leominster, Mass., to face the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs at 6:35 p.m. Monday, before hosting the same Dawgs on Tuesday in an 11 a.m. Education Day game at Holman Stadium.
