Hollis Brookline Dodgers fall to Monadnock in NEIBL game

By Staff | Jul 18, 2014

HOLLIS – The Hollis Brookline Dodgers showcased their up-and-coming youth on the diamond, but a determined Monadnock squad was too much for them.

The Dodgers scrounged up some hits and base runners, but could not find a way to usher them home in their 4-0 loss Thursday to Monadnock in the Western Division New England Independent Baseball League matchup. It was Hollis Brookline’s fourth consecutive loss.

Monadnock (9-4) churned up three of its eight hits in the top of the second inning. With the bases loaded, John Ciacia cranked out an RBI single to left field for the game’s first tally.

Joe Edwards tacked on another RBI in the ensuing frame and then in the fourth, an error opened up the door for Tyrrell Torres to pull in two more runs with an RBI double.

“We had some mistakes defensively at key times in the game and some base running mistakes at key times, we were missing a key hit or two at opportune times,” Hollis Brookline coach Tom Walker said. “We’re in the games, we’ve just got to find a way to get over that hump.”

Due to the absence of some older players, Hollis Brookline (4-8-2) put some new faces in new places and some growing pains showed up on defense. The Dodgers committed four errors that contributed to Monadnock’s offensive production.

“We took advantage of a couple of mistakes that (Hollis Brookline) made and scored some runs on it and we didn’t leave too many runners on base,” Monadnock coach Dino Pioli said.

A couple of throws to first base were off the mark and a pair of fly balls fell to the ground due to miscommunication each time.

“We had some guys that were not in their normal position so communication is sometimes an issue,” Walker said.

Next year’s sophomore, Jack MacLeod (six hits, two walks, 31?3 innings) started out on the mound for the Dodgers. He fell into loaded bases situations in the second and third innings, but slipped out after allowing just one run in each scenario.

Hugh Devlin took over the mound in the fourth inning and gave up two hits, two walks and struck out two.

The Dodgers cranked out eight hits, but stranded 10 runners while Monadnock played airtight defense. In the bottom of the fifth, Nate Corsetti and Jack Shields pounded line drives to get one base, but a 1-4-3 double play brought an end to the inning.

Monadnock pitcher Jared Booth was productive on the mound with six strikeouts and a walk through seven innings.

“We had good pitching from Jared Booth, he played a complete game,” Pioli said.

The Dodgers are hoping to pick up some steam when they will have their more experienced players on the diamond during the final stretch of the season. They will next host Derry (3-6) on Saturday.

“The young guys have made some great strides since the beginning of the season, but come tournament time we’ll have to rely on some older guys,” Walker said.
