Steckowych holds lead at NHGA Mid-Am

NEW DURHAM – If you’re looking for staying power in New Hamphire amateur golf, look no further than the leader board in this week’s New Hampshire Golf Association Mid-Am Tournament at Lake Winnipesaukee Golf Club.

The leader is two-time winner Craig Steckowych of Portsmouth, whose even-par 72 on Tuesday was the best round of the tournament so far.

With a two-round total of 147, Steckowych has a two-stroke lead over Dan Arvanitis of Derryfield in Manchester, who won the first of his four Mid-Ams in 1986.

Sean Lacey of Intervale in Manchester is third at 152, and sitting in fourth at 153 is seven-time winner and defending champion Phil Pleat of Nashua, who won his first Mid-Am in 1990.

The 54-hole event concludes Wednesday. The only other locals to make the cut for today are Curt Graham of Souhegan Woods, who is tied for 16th at 160 and Larry Nuttall of Green Meadow, tied for 18th at 164.

The course is playing extremely tough. Only 14 of the 102 player field managed to break 80 on Monday. Steckowych’s relatively trouble free round on Tuesday included two bogeys and two birdies.

Pleat struggled with the par-4 16th hole both days, finishing with a pair of double bogeys.
