Silver Knights’ Shaw choosing Boston College over NY Mets

By Staff | Jun 9, 2012

NASHUA – Chris Shaw was certainly happy to have been drafted by the New York Mets in the 26th round of this week’s Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, don’t get him wrong.

But don’t put the Nashua Silver Knights first baseman in a Mets organization’s uniform, either.

“I’m going to college,” he said with a nod prior to Friday night’s home opener, which was delayed by rain after three innings. There was a robust crowd of 1,659 on hand.

Shaw was reaffirming his earlier statement that the selection wasn’t in a high enough round to be financially viable.

But, it was still a special feeling when the Mets called shortly after making the selection.

“I was excited,” Shaw, who just wound up his high school career in Lexington, Mass. “It’s pretty surreal, humbling at the same time to be able to get drafted.”

The Mets might not give up so easily, as Shaw is viewed as a premier power hitter. They have until July 15 to sign him.

“I’ll go to college,” Shaw said again. “But they said they’re going to try to make it interesting for me.”

Shaw said that would likely include a trip down to Citi Field in New York for a workout, etc. When he doesn’t know, except that it has to be before July 15.

Errors, errors everywhere

Nashua manager B.J. Neverett wasn’t too disappointed with Thursday’s 8-6 loss, citing the fact the team had its chances, leaving the bases loaded in both the first and third innings without getting anything.

But errors have marred the start of the season. Before the rains came in the top of the fourth inning on Friday with the Knights leading Old Orchard 3-2, Nashua had already committed three errors. That gave them six on the season already.

“It was a good first game for us,” Neverett said. “The competition in this league is much stronger (than a year ago). It’s as strong as I thought it would be. The mistakes were the difference.”

On Friday, two errors led to two Old Orchard runs, but the Knights bounced back with a two-run bloop single by Lamarre Rey in the first and go-ahead RBI single by Jon Minucci in the third.

Cole Warren tossed three frames but former Nashua North standout Alek Morency took the mound for the Knights following the delay.

Notes

The team makes it’s first visit to Martha’s Vineyard on Saturday for a 5 p.m. contest against the Sharks. Neverett will send New Mexico’s Chris Good to the hill. “He’s left-handed and has a nice changeup,” Neverett said. It’s possible Penn State’s T.J. Jann will start on Sunday at Holman, a 5 p.m. game where New England Patriot placekicker Stephen Gostowski will boot autographed footballs into the stands.

Zach Robins (Southern NH University) got his second straight start at shortstop on Friday. He had a couple of hits in Thursday’s opener.

Pittsfield took the early Opening Night attendance crown with a crowd of 2,261 fans Thursday at Waconah Park, but Brockton was expecting near 3,000 on Friday.
