Locals set for Elks Hoop Shoot district test

Six locals will vie for the the New Hampshire State Elks Southwest District Hoop Shoot Championship on Saturday, Jan. 7 at the Derry Boys and Girls Club Gym at 9:30 a.m.

Colin Toohey, age 12 of Hudson joins five Nashua youths: 12-year-old Ariana

Sola, 11-year old Ryan Haskell, 10-year old Aliyah Vasquez, and 9-year-olds Navein Sribalaharan, and Taylor Joyal will be competing.

They’ll be going up against contestants from

Manchester, Concord, Keene, Portsmouth, Dover, Rochester and Derry/Salem. There will be an awards luncheon to follow at the Derry/Salem Elks Lodge.

The South District Champions will advance to the State Elks Championship

Hoop Shoot at the Epsom Central School on Sunday, Feb. 5 to compete against the North District Elks champions from Laconia, Claremont, Franklin, Littleton, Lebanon and Plymouth.

State winners will be advancing to the New England Regional Hoop Shoot in South

Portland, Me., on March 22. The Elks National Hoop Shoot Free Throw Finals will take place in Chicago in April.

National Winners will have their names inscribed in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.The Nashua Lodge of Elks #720 has had only one National Hoop Shoot Champion, Caleb Donnelly of Hudson in 2006.

SWIMMING

NE synchronized meet

Several locals did well competing for the Granite YMCA Catalinas Synchronized Swim Team at the New England Synchronized Swim Association’s North & South Figure Meet at Wheaton College recently.

In the Novice age 9 to 10 level Naomie Pare of Litchfield placed sixth. In the Novice age 11-12 level, Phoebe Pare of Litchfield placed fifth while Nashuans Ryenne Georgiana placed sixth and Cayle Georgiana was seventh.

In the Intermediate age 13 and over level, Sophie Klekar of Litchfield placed in the top 17.

In the age 16-17 level, Annalise Poisson of Amherst placed in the top 12. In the age 18-19 level Katherine Spalding of Mont Vernon placed third.

Hockey

Southern NH Cavs Mites openings

The Southern NH Cavaliers Mini Mite limited travel program for youths ages five through eight has openings.

There are 12 week sessions with two hours of ice time per week and a high coach to player ratio. Players should know how to skate before they participate. The coaches are USA Hockey certified.

Uniforms are provided and equipment is available.

Baseball

Nashua Cal Ripken registration

Spring registration for the Nashua Cal Ripken Baseball League for youths ages 4 through 12 is now open on line at www.nashuacalripken.org.

Registration fees have been established:

For T-Ball, Rookies and Minors, $40 per player; Triple A and Majors,$50 per player and the family maximum cost for two or more players is $75.

There is a discount for those who register before Jan. 15. For more information, go to nashuacalripken.org.

Baseball/softball

MCAA Clinics

The MCAA will be holding a series of baseball and softball clinics on Saturdays and Sundays beginning in January at the New England Extreme Sports Training Complex in Wilton.

Baseball clinics are Saturdays 5-6 p.m. for ages 8-10, and 6-7 p.m. for ages 11-12. The clinics will be on Jan. 21, 28, Feb. 4, 11, 25 and March 4.

Softball will be held on Sundays for ages 8-12 from noon to 1 p.m. The dates are Jan. 22, 29, Feb. 5, 12, 26 and March 5.
