Fairgrounds wrestlers win middle-school tourney

By Staff | Mar 6, 2016

Fairgrounds captured the 10th annual Mark Thibault Memorial All-City Middle School Wrestling Tournament recently.

The event, held in conjunction with the Greater Nashua Boys and Girls Club, traditionally features the three Nashua middle schools (Fairgrounds, Elm Street, Pennichuck) as well as Nashua Catholic. It is held in memory of Mark Thibault, a former Nashua High School wrestler lost at sea in 2002.

This is only the Falcons second win in the tournament’s 10 year run.

"I wasn’t really expecting to win," said Fairgrounds coach Rick Lauria, who is retiring from coaching after 25 years.

"I thought our team was too young and inexperienced. I told my kids that this was our last tournament of the season, and that if everyone showed up and gave it everything they had, we had a good chance of winning. … I’m really proud of the way the kids wrestled."
