Bishop Guertin baseball tops Nashua North

NASHUA – Thursday was unquestionably an absolutely magnificent spring day, with temperatures approaching 70 and the sun shining brightly throughout.

But it wasn’t the ideal day for the Nashua North baseball squad to step into the path of the Bishop Guertin High juggernaut, falling by a 9-2 count.

Stepping into that Holman Stadium afternoon contest with the frustrations of a 15-3 throttling at the hands of the Nashua South Purple Panthers fresh in mind from the day before, North coach Zach Harris and his 2-4 crew found themselves pitted against a BG bunch which came in at a perfect 5-0 having disposed of Manchester Central and Winnacunnet over the previous two days.

To make things just a tad tougher for the home-standing Titans, they faced the challenge of trying to create some concerted form of offense against Guertin lefty standout pitcher Brett Anderson.

And things turned out just as one might expect knowing the above information, with Anderson putting forth an excellent performance in holding North to a mere four hits while striking out 12 would-be hitters and walking just two.

That made it three wins in three days for the now 6-0 Guertin group, which was fully expecting a day off today with the weather forecast sounding downright awful but a home game with Exeter on the schedule.

North, meanwhile, was 1-2 during the week with consecutive lopsided losses in which the now 2-5 Titans had been outscored by the lofty margin of 24-5.

So slipping into today, a day or two away from the diamond might be just what a physician might prescribe for coach Harris and his mob.

The Titans’ scheduled game at Alvirne for today had already been moved to Saturday prior to the first pitch of the Thursday contest, but with the amount of rain expected for today that Saturday battle might be postponed as well.

BG hurler Anderson gave North fits throughout the Thursday contest, right through the latter half of the seventh inning during which he struck out the side for whiffs numbers 10 to 12.

“Brett’s solid when he throws strikes, and he had it going today,” said BG coach Scott Painter. “He’s tough to beat when he pitches like he did today.”

The skilled southpaw was supported by an offense which bashed out some 13 hits against a pair of North hurlers, plating one run in the second, two in the third, three in the fifth, and then three more in the seventh after the Titans made some inroads on a comeback in the latter half of the sixth.

“Brett’s outstanding, and he’s been outstanding for the last two years,” said Titans’ skipper Harris of game-winning pitcher Anderson. “There are a lot of throwers in the state, but he’s a legitimate pitcher.”

The victorious Cardinals received multiple hits from a number of sources, with leadoff man Aiden Coyle smacking three singles, Sam Boudreau bashing a double and a single and driving home a run with a sacrifice fly, Alex George knocking two singles, and Jake Mitchell driving in two teammates with his pair of run-scoring singles.

Trevor Kelly collected two of the four North safeties – both singles – with the biggest Titans’ bash coming in the form of a two-run double by Hector Rodriguez in the latter half of the sixth frame.
