High School Football Week 7 Preview Capsules

By Tom King and Hector Longo - Staff Writers | Oct 11, 2018

Staff photo by TOM KING Nashua South's Brendon Frost gets chased down by Bedford's Alexander Pantelakos (59) during Friday night's Division I game at Stellos Stadium.

DIVISION I

Keene (1-5) vs. Nashua North (5-1)

WHEN: Friday, 6:30 p.m.

WHERE: Stellos Stadium.

LAST WEEK: Nashua North 41, Bishop Guertin 20; Merrimack 35, Keene 0.

LAST YEAR: Nashua North 38,

Keene 13.

FYI: A clear example of two teams heading in different directions, the Titans riding a five game winning streak and the incredible running of Curtis Harris (285 yards last week) and the Blackbirds have lost five straight, just trying to get through a trying season that has to have them thinking about the future of their program.

Merrimack (5-1) at Concord (4-2).

WHEN: Friday, 7 p.m.

WHERE: Concord’s Memorial Field.

LAST WEEK: Merrimack 35, Keene 0; Concord 35, Manchester Memorial 19.

LAST YEAR: Did not play.

FYI: This game was moved from Friday accommodate the Tide football program’s desire to attend the funeral services of a former player, but then returned to Friday night with Thursday’s rain. Huge game for Concord, led by quarterback Zach Miles, as the Tide is in a battle for perhaps the cluster’s fourth and final playoff spot. Huge game for the Tristan and Devin Wood-led Tomahawks, who want to keep pace with Nashua North before a huge meeting in Merrimack next Friday. Also, the ‘Hawks have allowed just nine points in their last 12 quarters.

Nashua South (2-4) at

Goffstown (3-3).

WHEN: Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

WHERE: Goffstown High School.

LAST WEEK: Bedford 42, Nashua South 0; Goffstown 21, Manchester Central 18.

LAST YEAR: Did not play.

FYI: This is an entirely different Grizzlies team than the one that started the season 0-3, including a home loss to Nashua North. They have big play capability, as shown by quarterback Charlie Keith last week. Panthers QB Dante Young has been under a lot of pressure in his backfield lately, and South will need to win the battle of the trenches to pull this one out and keep its playoff hopes alive. Same for Goffstown.

Bishop Guertin (1-5) at

Bedford (6-0)

WHEN: Saturday, 5 p.m.

WHERE: Bedford High School.

LAST WEEK: Nashua North 41, Bishop Guertin 20; Bedford 42, Nashua South 0.

LAST YEAR: Did not play.

FYI: The Bulldogs appear right now to be Division I’s best team, thanks to size up front and an overpowering defense led by Ryan Toscano, who is pretty good on offense too. Bedford will own the line of scrimmage, and if it can contain the speed of a player like BG’s Joey Lupo, it has a chance to extend the shutout quarter streak to 19. Not a given, though.

DIVISION II

Hollis Brookline (4-2) at

Souhegan (3-3)

WHEN: Friday, 7 p.m.

WHERE: At Souhegan High School

LAST WEEK: Souhegan 43, Pelham 33; Hollis Brookline 41, Sanborn 21

LAST YEAR: Hollis Brookline 48, Souhegan 42

FYI: Souhegan simply can’t overlook the fact that the Sabers led this matchup of rivals by three TDs at halftime before the Cavs came storming back to win and clinch a playoff spot. Great QB matchup here with the Sabers’ vet John Lohnes tangling with HB’s Sander Wimmer. Hollis Brookline averages 28.9 points a game, while Souhegan scores 26.5 a night. The team that plays defense wins.

Milford (4-2) at Sanborn (1-5)

WHEN: Saturday, 1:30 p.m.

WHERE: At Sanborn Regional High School, Kingston

LAST WEEK: Milford 34, Kennett 6; Hollis Brookline 41, Sanborn 21

LAST YEAR: Sanborn 14, Milford 13

FYI: Jackson Paradis, a fine-looking sophomore, keys a running game that has allowed Sanborn to frustrate some opponents early. But like many young teams, the Indians have made crucial mistakes. Health could be an issue for Milford if fullback Junior Ughu can’t backbone the “U2” offense. Edge rusher Alex Taylor played a huge game a week ago and could cause Sanborn fits this week.

Alvirne (5-1) at John Stark (4-2)

WHEN: Saturday, 2 p.m.

WHERE: At John Stark High School, Weare

LAST WEEK: Alvirne 55, West 27; John Stark 43, Pembroke 7

LAST YEAR: Did not play

FYI: It’s a cross-over battle that could be a glimpse of the upcoming state playoffs. The Broncos continue to be the surprise of Division II with QB Kyla Gora leading the way. A road win in a tough place to play against a Stark team that has ripped off three straight wins by a score of 117-20. Stark’s Jake Cole and Bo Lyons combined for five TDs on the ground in last week’s big win.

DIVISION III

Inter-Lakes (1-5) at

Campbell (6-0)

WHEN: Saturday, 1 p.m.

WHERE: At Campbell High School, Litchfield

LAST WEEK: Campbell 29, Kearsarge 15; Trinity 60, Inter-Lakes 30

LAST YEAR: Regular season, Campbell 42, Inter-Lakes 0; Playoffs, Campbell 37, Inter-Lakes 6

FYI: What is to make of last week’s two-TD Cougars’ win over Kearsarge, a winless team? Campbell hasn’t exactly been torching teams, but here comes Inter-Lakes/Moultonboro, which is riding a four-game losing streak.
