Broncos battle St. Thomas but fall short

Staff photo by TOM KING QB Kyle Gora did what he could to try to bring the Broncos back, but they fell just short on Friday night vs. St. Thomas.

The Alvirne High School football team is certainly proving it will be competitive in Division II.

The Broncos fell to 1-1 on the season, but not before putting up a good battle against a tough St. Thomas team, falling 26-22 in their home opener.

The Saints took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on touchdowns by Nick Todatti and Jack Benelli, but the one that hurt was a Hunter Lessard touchdown catch with 17 seconds left in the first half to give St. Thomas a 20-6 lead at halftime.

The Kyle Gora-led Alvirne offense didn’t quit however, getting a TD and two-point conversion with 5:03 left in the third quarter to close to 20-14.

But the 2-0 Saints put together a drive with another back-breaking TD, this one by Will MacLean to go up 26-14 with just 25 seconds left in the third quarter.

Gora, however, scored on a 12-yard run with 8:21 left, and another two-point conversion closed the Broncos to within 26-22. But unfortunately for Alvirne, it stayed that way.

The Broncos will take on one of their now South Conference area rivals, Souhegan, in Amherst next Friday night at 7:30.
