Milford football mows down Manchester West

MILFORD – Home proved a welcome sight for the Milford Spartans, returning after a difficult opening week loss for a convincing 35-12 victory over the Blue Knights of Manchester West.

Following an early fumble, the Spartans recovered quickly, forcing a punt and answering with an 11-play drive capped with Gavin Urda’s five-yard rush into the end zone. Junior Ughu added a touchdown from three yards out on the next Milford drive, with Ughu and Urda each adding another rushing touchdown in the second half. Senior Owen Zalenski added Milford’s fifth touchdown of the night with 9:12 left in the contest.

Sophomore Xavier Burpee provided a consolation touchdown for West with 41 seconds on the clock.

For Milford head coach Keith Jones, it was gratifying to get a win on the board, although he gave plenty of credit to Mayheux and the Blue Knights for providing a difficult obstacle to overcome.

“Other than the miscues early in the first quarter, I think we played well tonight,” said Jones. “But give those kids from West credit, they hung hard and tough all night. They gave us everything we could handle. That kid Mayheux, Jesus, he’s like a battering ram. Our kids felt it when he hit them tonight.”

Milford looks to improve to 2-1 next week as they travel to Pelham while West heads north for a Saturday afternoon contest against Pembroke.
