NASHUA – Bow High School senior Dominique Biron is expected back this weekend, attempting to defend her State High School Heptathlon

championship.

A slew of noteworthy local athletes are out to try and stop it from happening.

Nashua High School South hosts the State Decathlon and Heptathlon Championships this weekend, beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

At the top of the heptathlon contenders list is Nashua South standout Sydney Lewis, the state Division I high jump champ. The sophomore was second to Biron a year ago in this event, one of five top-10 finishers back from last year’s competition.

Lewis has her two best events, the 100 hurdles and high jump on Day 1, along with the shot and 200 meters, on Saturday. Sunday, the girls move to the long jump, javelin and 800 meters.

Another contender could be the state’s top 300 hurdler, Elise Lambert,a senior from Souhegan, who didn’t compete in this last year.

“I’m hoping for a top 10 and shooting for the podium,” said Lambert, who spent Friday in North Carolina competing in the National 4×800 race.

Another Saber, sophomore Ashley Barham was 23rd in this event a year ago.

South state champ sprinter Crismeily Borg is another top newcomer to the event, while sophomore Abby Coy will represent North’s top hope.

The decathlon looks to be a wide-open affair with Portsmouth Christian junior Fiston Capongo (seventh last year) as the top returning finisher.

Merrimack High senior Brian Genet, who was fourth in the Division I long jump, placed 13th in this decathlon a year ago.

Nashua North’s Brazden Ellis, South long-jumper Paul Marchand and a pair of Meet of Champions-placing throwers in Merrimack’s Jared Dyer and Campbell’s Nathan Bazzocchi could be threats.

The boys will tackle the 100, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400 Saturday with the 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 meters on Sunday.
