Panthers are now 3-0, while Souhegan picks up first win

BASEBALL

Nashua South 5,

Winnacunnet 3

The Panthers are off to a 3-0 start thanks to Jake Smith’s tie-breaking home run in the top of the eighth inning in Hampton.

Trailing 2-0, Roe Hendrick had a big base-clearing triple to give the Panthers a 3-2 lead. On the mound, Andres Hulfachor had two strikeouts in relief to pick up the win. Starter Zach Finklestein had a strong outing, striking out eight in 6.2 innings.

The Panthers are slated to host Spaulding on Thursday at Holman Stadium, weather permitting.

Merrimack 5,

Trinity 4

Jake Goodwin got his first career win, allowing just two earned runs on two hits over six innings. Ryan Ivester tossed a clean seventh for his first career save.

Offensively, Cole Keefe had two hits and two RBIs. Spenser Clark added a two-run single. The Tomahawks, who got their first win (1-3) in the Kyle Harvell coaching era, face Bishop Guertin Friday at 7 p.m. at Holman Stadium.

Londonderry 7,

Bishop Guertin 6

The Cards dropped their first game of the season (3-1) in a game that was moved from Londonderry to Holman Stadium due to field conditions. BG is slated to visit Exeter on Thursday, weather permitting.

Manchester Memorial 11,

Alvirne 3

Memorial (nine hits, now 1-3) broke open a tight 3-2 contest with eight runs over the last three innings as the Broncos fell to 0-3. Alvirne’s Levi Griffin had two hits.  Zach Reddig blasted an RBI double and Ryan Santos contributed an RBI single.

Alvirne hosts Nashua North on Friday.

Souhegan 10,

Milford 0

Jacob Grassett tossed a complete game six-hitter, striking out nine while walking just one as the Sabers picked up their first win (1-2) of the season.

Souhegan had only four hits but took advantage of nine walks and three Spartan errors. Caelan Behn and Sam Corbett had a double each while Max Leonard had a triple. Leonard (center field), Matt Zifchak (second base) and Aiden Casey (third) all made key defensive plays. Bill Dobbs had two hits for Milford, now 1-1.

Souhegan hosts Hollis Brookline on Monday while Milford visits Pelham on Friday.

ConVal 10,

Hollis Brookline 3

(12 innings)

Visiting ConVal picked up seven runs in the top of the 12th as the Cavaliers fell to 0-3 despite good pitching from Kaito Kramarcyk and Joe Messina. Joe Brown led the HB offense while Kyle Hsu played well defensively. The Cavs host Hanover on Friday.

Campbell 11,

Bishop Brady 8

Keegan Mills went 4 for 4 with two triples, a single and a double and earned his second save on the mound striking out the side in the seventh to help the Cougars move to 2-0.

Jake Donovan had three hits and earned the win, pitching 3.2 innings of middle relief. Campbell visits Hillsboro-Deering on Friday.

Wilton-Lyndeborough 4,

Portsmouth Christian 3

Sean Brennan got the win going five innings and allowing 1 run on three hits while striking out five.Kyler Trembay and Troy Brennan finished it out as the Warriors improved to 4-0. Sophmore Jacob Boette and Freshman J.J. leblanc came through with run scoring singles. Down 4-0, PCA battled back and had the tying run on third before Brennan got the final out.

SOFTBALL

Winnacunnet 13,

Nashua South 4

The Warriors (21 hits) used a five-run sixth to break the game open and send the Panthers to their fourth straight loss (1-4).

South had eight hits on the day, as Delia Callery, Catherine Covert, and Sarah Picard each had two hits. Pitcher Erica Frothingham took the loss over seven innings, allowing 12 runs while fanning four.

Londonderry 13,

Bishop Guertin 1

The 0-3 Cardinals lone run came when senior Sara Hey scored on a wild pitch. Sophomore Taylor Cushion and freshman Petra Bajdek both had hits for BG, which visits Merrimack on Friday.

Alvirne 19,

Manchester Memorial 2

Liz DeRosa paced a potent Bronco attack with three hits, including two homers, one a grand slam, for six RBIs as Alvirne is now 3-0. Also,

Alexis Charbonneau went 4 for 4 with three singles , a double and two RBIs.

Alicia Salvalzo (three singles, two RBIs) and Haley Peaslee (two singles, two RBIs) also helped out.

Megan Jacques got the win in the circile allowing just two runs on four hits over five innings, striking out four and walking two.

Hollis Brookline 18,

ConVal 6

Gabby Paquin picked up the win the circle, limiting the opposition to four hits (six runs) over five innings. But HB had enough offense to get their first win of the season (1-2) as the leaders were Kara Lukovits (2 for 3, four RBIs), Cassidy Pigott (3 for 3, RBI) and Skylar Mack (2 for 3, three RBIs).

Campbell 7,

Bishop Brady 2

Marissa Carignan tossed six scoreless frames, allowing just three hits while fanning eight for the Cougars (3-0), who had 11 hits of their own. Four had two hits, as Ally McKenna had two triples, Emma Rousseau two doubles, and Liv Garand and Cassidy Gibbons two hits as well.

Wilton-Lyndeborough 13,

Portsmouth Christian 3

The Warriors are now 4-0 as Lexi Balam tossed a complete game, scattering six hits, allowing one earned run while striking out an astounding 16. She also had three hits to help pace a 16-hit attack.

Other warriors who had good offensive days were Emma Skelly (two hits, four RBIs), Rachel Christino with (three hits) and Brooke Lane and Janel Barchand (two each). WLC has a school vacation layoff, not returning until April 30 when it visits Pittsfield.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Souhegan 3,

Winnacunnet 0

The Sabers moved to 2-1 in the early going, rebounding from a loss to Windham with a 28-26, 25-15, 25-22 thumping of Winnacunnet. Nick Freud had six kills and served six aces. Eli Young chipped in nine digs with a pair of aces. Khaled Nazeer had seven kills with three aces and Mike Estabrook  was strong at the net with four kills and joined the dynamite serve parade with four aces.

Pinkerton 3,

Bishop Guertin 1

Guertin showed some courage, down 2-0, taking the third game before falling to 1-3 on the season. Jack Wizboski had 13 kills with four blocks. Chris Barillas dished out 26 assists with a pair of aces and Joe Noon pounded eight kills with two blocks.

Salem 3,

Hollis Brookline 1

The Cavaliers fell to 2-2 with the hard-fought loss at Salem. Jonathan Brackett was immense at the net with 15 kills and middle man Matt Simco added six. Scott Vancoughnett dished out 25 assists, and junior Jack Sinclair roamed the floor with 10 digs.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Merrimack 12,

Nashua North 6

Merrimack broke to a 9-2 first-half lead and never looked back. Danielle Upton scored five North goals and Campbell Haller had the other. Zoe Fillebrown had nine Titans saves.

Souhegan 9,

Portsmouth 8

The Sabers are now 5-0 after leading 7-4 at the half and holding off 1-2 Portsmouth. Savannah Behn and Abby Cranney each had three goals, while O’Neill Galinson added a pair and Clare Woodford a single tally. Taylor Clark had three assists while Mallory Chamberlain and Taylor Dudek had one each. Alex LaBrosse had four saves in the net for Souhegan, which visits Salem on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Campbell 17,

Trinity 3

Campbell posted its first win of the year in style as Jocelyn Theriault had four goals and three assists. Hannah Douglas had three goals, while Caitlin Newell and Emma Montenero added two each.

Hollis Brookline 13,

Milford 0

Caroline Smith, Rachel Ash, Ari Friedman and Josie Farwell played stifling defense all over the field while Olivia Valentine made six saves to get HB their first shutout of the season.

The Cavs’ scoring was led by Kelsey Sweeney (six goals on 10 shots) and Victoria Bruzik (two goals).

Rachel Cerato, Reagan Berry and Paisley Broadhurst had a goal apiece.

. Cece Fetter led the winnes with three assists while Abbey Magnuszewski added a goal/assist to go with six ground balls. Tasha White had a goal/assist and five draw controls, while Elise Bender added three caused turnovers.

BOYS LACROSSE

Trinity 9,

Campbell 6

Up 4-3 at the half, Campbell couldn’t hold on, hampered by 22 minutes of action playing a man down.

The man down unit of Zach Wilson, Jake Hartwell, Dan Israel, Dylan Bryant, Adam Breton, and Sky Compagna were able to keep Campbell in the game. Hartwell led the team with five ground ball pickups.

GIRLS TENNIS

Bishop Guertin 9,

Salem 0

Bishop Guertin moved to 7-0 as Claire Reynolds, Amy Maalouf, Katelyn Nichols, Hannah Gilbertson, Elizabeth Janiak and Margo Liakos rolled through the singles victories.

Alvirne 7,

Nashua North 2

Alvirne picked up its first win of the season, moving to 1-5. Brenna Rose and Liz Dion nailed Titans victories in the top two singles matches, but that was all the scoring Nashua North would do in falling to 1-4.

Nashua South 9,

Merrimack 0

Meghana Avvaru gritted out an 8-6 thriller at No. 2 singles over McKenzy Miller to set the tone for South. Kaitlin Fitzgibbons and Pallavi Ravada each had sharp wins for South. Merrimack falls to 1-4.

Manchester West 5,

Hollis Brookline 4

Sam Randlett and Lia Eisenberg put up wins in singles and doubles for Hollis Brookline, which suffered a tough loss to West. Emily Spooner also won in singles for the Cavaliers with a shutout at No. 3.

Portsmouth 8,

Milford 1

The Spartans suffered their first loss of the season (3-1). Grace Carpenter got their lone win, 8-3 at No. 1 singles. Milford visits Manchester West on Friday.

BOYS TENNIS

Nashua North 8,

Alvirne 1

Alvirne’s Anish Menghani and Drew Cote prevented the clean sweep, beating the cold and North’s third doubles tandem 8-5. Kevin Kelly led a spotless Titans’ singles sheet, with Michael Lai, Nathan Yeung, Stephen Norris, Zach Rowe and Seth White all getting the job done for 5-1 Nashua North.

Bishop Guertin 9,

Salem 0

Chris Wang won the marquee showdown with Salem’s Matt Tilley and the Cardinals took care of the rest in style for their second straight win. Ryan Fitzgerald, Vladimir Kupchik, Evan Butler, Spencer Beek and Kevin Stinson all had singles wins in the blowout.

Nashua South 8,

Merrimack 1

The Panthers swept singles for their sixth straight (6-1) win. Singles winners from top to bottom included Amol Khanna (8-2), Rohan Kumar, Derek Lee (8-2), Mike Beaudete (8-2), Matt Beaudette (8-0), and Anish Kammila (8-1).

Suhas Katikanen/George Eid (8-6) and John Champa/Pratheck Katamarti (8-5) also won, while Merrimack took No. 2 doubles with C.J. Terranova/Colby Benoit winning 9-8 (9-7).
