NASHUA – Bishop Guertin’s Ashley Killen was killin’ it on Wednesday night.

The Cardinals’ junior forward scored the game’s only two goals as Guertin topped area rival Souhegan, 2-0 at Conway Arena to improve to 2-0 on the season.

“Ashley is obviously one of our more skilled players,” Guertin coach Scott Ciszek said. “Since she got here as a freshman she’s been a contributing factor to the team. The best thing is she skates hard and she plays two-way hockey.”

“I got lucky because my teammates were able to give me good passes,” a humble Killen said. “We just work well together.”

The Sabers, meanwhile, needed more offense, falling to 2-1. But they got 28 saves from goalie Makayla Lachance, keeping them within striking distance.

“When she’s in net, we always have a chance,” Sabers coach Kelli Braley said.

But Killen was opportunistic, scoring just 10 seconds into the Cardinals only power play of the first period after the Sabers had taken a boarding penalty.

Then, in the second period, she wasted no time converting a pass from Lindsay Hult, flipping a wrister over the shoulder of Saber netminder Makayla Lachance (20 saves) just 20 seconds into the second period for a 2-0 Cardinal lead.

The Sabers went 0-for-2 on the power play, one in the third period. But goalie Abby Houle came up big with one of her 16 saves on a breakaway by Souhegan’s Julia Charest with 4:11 to play.

“She did what she needed to do to get that shutout,” Ciszek said. “She earned it.”

Cardinals Emma Wallet and Brooke Yarboudy led a defense that was strong in front of Houle when the Sabers applied late pressure.

“We changed up the lines going into the third, we didn’t have a choice down 2-0,” Sabers coach Kelli Braley said. “We had the sense of urgency we were lacking in the first two (periods).”

“We came out and we played defensively in the third period,” Ciszek said.

And for the Cards, that and Killen’s offense was enough.
