Cougars fall to Winnisquam in Division III volleyball semis

The Campbell High School girls volleyball team enjoyed a fine season, but once again the Cougars ran into a late tournament roadblock.

Campbell, seeded third, fell 3-0 to No. 2 Winnisquam on Wednesday in the Division III semifinals at Plymouth Regional High School.

“We had our eyes on the prize all season,” Cougars coach Melissa Miner said. “This is not how our season was supposed to end.”

Campbell got off to a bad start, falling

25-15, and then they dropped two close sets, 25-22 and 25-21. They finish the season at a still-impressive 15-3. Winnisquam (17-1) moves on to Friday’s finals.

Senior Cassidy Gibbons had an ace, six killls, three digs and a block. Senior captain Gabi Sott had an ace with seven kills and seven digs. Other Cougars who played well were junior captain Liv Garand (ace, eight digs), junior Meghan Gibbons (ace, four digs) and senior Mary Kuczkowski (15 assists). Garand and Gibbons undoubtedly will be centerpieces of next year’s team.

“Kudos to Winnisquam who played a great match,” Miner said. “We got our hands on almost every ball and we fought for every point, it just wasn’t enough tonight.”

Still, Miner was impressed with how her team competed.

“What I am most proud of is that these girls never gave up,” she said. ” They still served hard, dug balls and did their best blocking until the very end. These girls are amazing.”
