Nashua South misses buzzer-beaters, falls to Bishop Guertin in OT
NASHUA – Mike Osgood got the ball in the post, turned and flipped it toward the net with two seconds on the clock.
The 6-foot-5 junior forward watched in amazement – along with a packed gymnasium of fans, Nashua South teammates and host Bishop Guertin Cardinals – as his shot circled the rim multiple times. Dipping and rolling, the buzzer sounded as his shot escaped the cylinder for good and fell to the floor.
Four minutes later, Panthers’ teammate Yordy Tavarez would have his buzzer-beating attempt back rim as Bishop Guertin held on for a 67-64 overtime win.
BG head coach Jim Mignault was still trying to make sense of Osgood’s miss when his Cardinals were celebrating another close win in a season full of last-minute finishes.
“Somebody or something was sitting up there on that rim,” said Mignault of the regulation ender. “It looked good to me. It was in and out, and in again. Then it popped out that last time.”
Tavarez helped set the stage for the fourth-quarter buzzer attempt, finishing off a three-point play (layup and free throw) to follow a Vinny Ortolano 3-pointer. Tavarez then followed up hitting one of two free throws for a 56-54 South lead with 58 seconds left.
BG tied things up at 56-56 on a strong move to the basket by Costas Niarhos with 26 seconds remaining, setting the stage for Osgood’s attempt.
South head coach Nate Mazerolle admitted the last-second miss in regulation took the wind out of the sails of his Panthers heading into overtime.
“It was hard to rally after that,” Mazerolle said. “It was in three times. The guys were a little deflated after that. Somehow we still had a real good look at the end.”
Tavarez, who led South with 24 points, already had three 3-pointers at the point in the game.
BG’s Kyle Gavin led all scorers with 26 points. He had 14 of those at the half, as BG led 34-27.
Jack Zimmerman and Niarhos were also a force offensively for BG (11-3) with 14 and 10 respectively, while Osgood and Trevor Knight chipped in with 12 and 10 each for South (8-6).
