Nashua North gets key win over Pinkerton

NASHUA – The Nashua High School North girls basketball team was seeking the kind of victory that would legitimize its spot near the top of the Division I standings.

On Monday night, the Titans got that win, as they used a big third quarter to defeat Pinkerton Academy, 59-50.

North, which hadn’t played in a week due to weather, started the game strong. The Titans (10-3) frustrated Pinkerton (11-3) into a handful of turnovers and finished the quarter with a 12-6 advantage, led by senior Emily Kendall’s six points. Pinkerton stormed back in the second, overcoming the Titan’s pressing defense to tie the game before the half. Taylor Choate scored eight of her team-high 16 points in the second quarter.

But with Choate in foul trouble in the third, North coach Ricky Oliver compensated by changing up the defense. The change worked out, as the Titans allowed only eight points in the frame.

“Taylor had four fouls so I had to switch up our defense,” Oliver said. “We moved around different pieces, we gambled, and it worked.”

Sara Cordova helped the Titans get on the board in the third quarter, scoring nine of her team’s 18 points. Her three 3s helped ignite a 14-4 run that gave North a 10-point lead heading into the fourth.

“We see that everyday in practice,” Oliver said, “We do a lot of shooting and a lot of execution. (Monday) it worked.”

Pinkerton managed to cut North’s lead to six with about two minutes remaining, but the Titans sank some timely free throws to secure the victory. Titans’ capitain Dezi Okorie finished with only four points but grabbed a team-high 10 boards, including four offensive rebounds. Kendall and Cordova each finished with 12 points.

With the win, North within a half-game of Pinkerton for the fourth spot in the division standings.
