Hollis Brookline boys finish third, Souhegan boys, girls both take fourth

DARTMOUTH – James Rezzarday and his Souhegan High School swim teams were unable to take home another championship but still had an admirable showing at the Division II Swimming and Diving Championship on Sunday.

The Sabers boys and girls both finished in fourth, handing the crown over to the Oyster River teams. The Hollis Brookline boys finished in third despite a depleted roster.

The Cavaliers only brought along four boys but still won a handful of events, finishing in first for the 200-yard medley and 200-yard free relays. Matt Flacone had a pair of second-place finishes in the 200 IM and 100 breast while teammates Tim Regan (100 fly) and Austin McCalmont (100 breast) finished third in their respective events. The girls finished in 18th overall.

“We had a relatively small team,” Hollis Brookline coach Bob Ouellette said. “Every single one of the boys swam their best times and we ended up third overall, which is pretty impressive for a team of four.”

Tyler Howard and Alex Bedard led the way for the Souhegan boys, each taking home a pair of golds.

The Sabers 200 medley and 400 relay teams both finished in second. On the girls side, the Sabers 400 relay team finished in third overall.

Margaret Dean finished in third for the 50 free and fourth for the 100 fly while teammate Jamie Freud finished in fifth place in the 200 IM and 100 free.

“We’re already looking for next year,” Rezzarday said. “It’s tough to win these back-to-back. They did the best they could and I’m very happy with the meet overall.”

Souhegan’s quest for a second straight title wasn’t helped by the snow and ice over the past couple of weeks.

“(The weather) was killing practices,” Rezzarday said, “so that hurt quite a bit. We didn’t make the last practice and the week before we lost another two. It hurts because you can’t get that time in the water.”

Campbell’s Grant Lavasseur had a solid day, finishing second in the 100 fly and 100 back. Teammate Michael Douglas finished in third for the 100 free, helping the boys to a ninth-place finish. The Milford girls finished in 11th, led by strong outings from Kaitlyn McManus and Zoe Daudier.

The meet had been scheduled for Saturday afternoon, but was postponed due to snow. The postponement to Sunday caused the cancellation of the Meet of Champions.
