Bedford wins, Bishop Guertin sixth at Mount Sunapee

Bedford High School rode the first place giant slalom run of Aiden Wheeler and a pair of seconds in the slalom and giant slalom by Tim Weeks to a Division I boys Alpine championship at Mount Sunapee on Tuesday.

Pinkerton Academy’s Dan Lannan won the slalom and finished third in the giant slalom to help the Astros to a third place showing overall. Bedford (771 points: 385 giant slalom, 386 slalom) and Pinkerton (681: 324, 357) sandwiched runner-up Keene (722: 371, 351), which utilized a fourth in the giant slalom by Michael Kerr and a sixth in the slalom by Alex Stroshine to finish second.

Pinkerton was followed by Timberlane (676: 335, 341), Concord (641: 293, 348), Bishop Guertin (597: 303, 294), Exeter (553:276, 277), Nashua South (541: 291, 250), Spaulding (502: 244, 258) and Dover (492: 248, 244) to round out the Top 10. Nashua North (482: 249, 233) and Londonderry (482: 241, 241) tied for 11th, while Manchester Central (442: 215, 227), Merrimack (425: 225, 200), Manchester West (404: 222, 182) and Manchester Memorial (48: 48, 0) closed out the scoring from 13th through 16th.

Individually, Nashua South’s Jack Rice was the top local finisher in either event. Rice finished 14th in the giant slalom, posting a two-run combined time of 1 minute, 15.27 seconds. He was faster in his second run (36.79 seconds) than his first (38.48). The top local in the slalom was Bishop Guertin’s Jake O’Donnell, whose two-run time of 1:19.69 (39.44, 40.25) was good enough for 24th.

Other locals in the slalom’s Top 50 were: BG’s Charlie Hemmenway (26th place, 1:21.53 combined time), David Barry (33rd, 1:23.78), Todd Wellman (37th, 1:27.39), John Thurston (38th, 1:27.42) and Matt Szyszlo (48th, 1:30.82); South’s Zachary Peterson (31st, 1:23.27) and Evan Lowe (34th, 1:24.07); North’s Lucas Sayers (36th, 1:24.77); and Merrimack’s Peter Reeser (39th, 1:27.62).

Locals in the Top 50 giant slalom event were: BG’s Hemmenway (27th, 1:19.49), O’Donnell (29th, 1:19.89), Szyszlo (30th, 1:21.26), Wellman (31st, 1:21.28) and Barry (38th, 1:23.07); South’s Peterson (20th, 1:17.00) and Lowe (47th, 1:26.18); North’s Sayers (28th (1:19.57) and Jacob Henning (46th, 1:25.82); and Merrimack’s Josh Meier (40th, 1:24.64) and Reeser (45th, 1:25.78).

Division IV cross country skiing is now scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18 at Bedford Legacy Park, while Division I cross country was rescheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19 at Bedford Legacy Park. Division II Alpine girls is TBA.
