New England Wrapup

Chad Kackert rushed for 166 yards and two touchdowns as Rhode Island defeated New Hampshire 55-42 on Saturday.

R.J. Toman added 234 yards passing and two touchdowns on 15 of 27 completions for the Wildcats (8-1, 5-1 Colonial Athletic Association). He also rushed for 56 yards on the ground as New Hampshire won its third straight game.

The Rams (1-8, 0-6) cut New Hampshire’s lead to 38-36 when Chris Paul-Etienne threw a 72-yard touchdown to Shawn Leonard with 12:41 left in the fourth quarter. But Toman connected with Chris Jeannot on a 53-yard touchdown and Sean Jellison added a 4-yard touchdown run to put the game out of reach for New Hampshire.

Paul-Etienne threw for a career-high 424 yards and four touchdowns. Leonard finished with a career-high 275 yards receiving and three touchdowns on 10 catches.

Dartmouth 20, Cornell 17, OT

Greg Patton rushed for 245 yards and two touchdowns and broke Dartmouth’s single-game rushing record in a 20-17 double overtime win over Cornell. Patton, who finished with 29 carries, surpassed Al Rosier who set the previous record with a 229-yard rushing game against Brown in 1991. Patton also had scoring runs of 52 and 13 yards.

The Big Green (2-6, 2-3 Ivy League) pulled ahead 20-17 in the second overtime on Foley Schmidt’s 40-yard field goal. The Big Red (2-6, 1-4) could’ve sent the game into a third overtime, but Brad Greenway missed a 36-yard field goal.

James Madison 22, Maine 14

Justin Thorpe threw one touchdown pass and ran for another, helping James Madison score the game’s first 22 points en route to a 22-14 win over Maine. Thorpe was 9-for-13 with 133 yards and two interceptions for the Dukes (4-5, 2-4 Colonial Athletic Association), and he added 83 yards rushing on 17 carries.

The James Madison quarterback rushed for a 42-yard touchdown to put the Dukes up 9-0 midway through the second quarter after a getting a safety earlier in the frame.

Brown 35, Yale 21

Kyle Newhall-Caballero threw two touchdown passes and ran for another, and Brown steamrolled one of the nation’s best defenses for nearly 500 yards in a 35-21 win over Yale.

Brown (5-3, 3-2 Ivy League) scored on Kyle Newhall-Caballero’s 10-yard pass to Buddy Farnham in the second quarter for a 7-0 lead. Yale (4-4, 2-3) answered with Mordecai Cargill’s 41-yard touchdown reception to cut the lead to 7-6.

Adam Money’s 77-yard interception return for a touchdown — the fourth-longest interception return in Yale history — put the Bulldogs in front 12-7. Newhall-Caballero scored on a 5-yard run for a 14-12 halftime lead.

In the third, Newhall-Caballero hit Farnham for a 30-yard touchdown. On the Bears’ next possession, Spiro Theodhosi scored on a 16-yard run.

Bobby Sewall’s 3-yard touchdown run gave Brown a 35-15 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Harvard 34, Columbia 14

Gino Gordon ran for two touchdowns and Collie Winters passed for another as Harvard remained unbeaten in the Ivy League with a 34-14 over Columbia. Gordon ran six yards for his first touchdown as the Crimson (6-2, 5-0) scored 21 points in the first quarter.

He added his second on a 3-yard run midway through the third.

UMass 37, Northeastern 7

Tony Nelson ran for 116 yards and three touchdowns to lead Massachusetts to a 37-7 win over Northeastern on Saturday.

Nelson, who finished with 20 carries, scored on two 1-yard runs to give the Minutemen (5-4, 3-3 Colonial Athletic Association) a 17-0 lead in the second quarter. He also scored on a 9-yard run in the second half.

Kyle Havens connected with Victor Cruz on an 11-yard touchdown to extend Massachusetts’ margin to 24 points in the second quarter. Haven was 15-for-21 for 187 yards for the Minutemen. Cruz caught five passes for 88 yards.

The Minutemen totaled 452 yards on offense compared to 145 by the Huskies (1-8, 1-5).

Northeastern was held scoreless through the first three quarters until defensive back Kyle Hunte picked off Massachusetts backup quarterback Scott Woodward’s pass, returning the interception 51 yards for a touchdown.

Holy Cross 24, Lehigh 20

Dominic Randolph threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Freddie Santana with 1:03 remaining to seal Holy Cross’ 24-20 comeback win over Lehigh. The pair’s second TD connection in the contest — they also got together on a 10-yard pass for a 17-10 Holy Cross (8-1, 4-0 Patriot League) lead midway through the third — capped the game-winning, 81-yard drive.

Sacred Heart 24, Bryant 14

Dale Fink threw for 175 yards and two touchdowns as Sacred Heart defeated Bryant 24-14.

Fink’s first scoring pass, a 30-yarder to Steve Tedesco, put the Pioneers (2-7, 2-5 Northeast Conference) ahead 10-7 early in the second quarter. Marcel Archer gained 109 yards on 17 carries, including a 49-yarder and a 1-yard touchdown in the second quarter to boost Sacred Heart’s lead to 17-7.

Lindsey Gamble gained 73 yards on six carries for the Bulldogs. Sacred Heart is 3-0 against Bryant, which it last faced in 2000.

So. Conn. 71, St. Anselm 14

In the 2009 season finale, the Saint Anselm football team dropped a 71-14 final to visiting Southern Connecticut at Grappone Stadium. Saint Anselm ends the season at 2-8 overall and 1-7 in league play.

The Owls end the season at 6-4 overall and 6-2 in the Northeast-10. The Owls jumped out to a quick 13-0 lead in the opening 4:31, putting together two quick drives for the early lead.

The Hawks got on the board with 7:37 left in the opening period though as freshman quarterback Michael Pierce (Andover, Mass.) hit senior Ryan Fritch (Winsted, Conn.) for an 8-yard touchdown to cut the lead down to 13-7.

The Owls took control later in the quarter though with touchdown passes of 52 and 61 yards from quarterback Chris Roberts (New Britain, Conn.) for a 26-7 lead after one quarter. Southern Connecticut pushed that lead to 43-7 at the halftime break before pulling away for the 71-14 victory.
