Amnesty International has no ties to ALEC

Letter to the Editor

In his April 29 guest commentary (“Lot of misinformation out there about ALEC these days”), state Rep. Jordan Ulery, R-Hudson, claims to address misinformation regarding the American Legislative Exchange Council but actually adds misinformation of his own.

Amnesty International USA is not, and has never been, a member of ALEC. We are aware of no authorized representative of Amnesty International USA having participated in an ALEC discussion or meeting regarding proposed legislation in New Hampshire or any other state.

Ulery’s invocation of Amnesty International’s name in a discussion about the partisanship of an unrelated group is wrong and unwarranted by the facts. Amnesty International tirelessly defends human rights around the world, free of any political ideology or agenda.

If Ulery wishes to debunk criticisms of ALEC, he should address these criticisms directly, instead of making blind connections between organizations that do not exist.
