School choice bill should be rejected

Letter to the Editor

This letter is in response to the guest commentary by Ken Gorrell published in The Sunday Telegraph of March 18 titled “Parents should be free to choose best school for child.”

Contrary to Mr. Gorrell’s commentary, all parents are free to choose the best schools for their children. The more affluent parents can opt out for private schooling.

The “public” is taxed to provide an “adequate” public school education. Parents dissatisfied with public schools always have the option to use privately funded scholarships and their own money to educate their children.

HB 1607 advocates for “New Hampshire school choice” by taking taxpayer money to support private schools and is not in the best interest of state government.
