Boys & Girls Club, Front Door Agency, Family Promises, UW have volunteer opportunities

By Sara Ceaser - Guest Columnists | Oct 13, 2019

United Way of Greater Nashua’s “Volunteer Greater Nashua” volunteerism web portal, created through a partnership with The Telegraph is a great place to learn about volunteering in our area. Volunteer Greater Nashua is an easy-to-understand website that allows people who would like to volunteer in Greater Nashua to search for opportunities by zip code, interest, area and more. It is an excellent way to find the volunteer position you are looking for and gives nonprofits a way to let the community know about what they need. Here are some of the highlights of the most recent opportunities featured on the site, but you can find more on Volunteer Greater Nashua at http://www.volunteergreaternashua.org

Boys & Girls Club

of Greater Nashua

Since 1971, the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Nashua has been helping our youth to avoid risky behaviors, stay in school and succeed in life. During the summer months, camp programs and the One Positive Place drop-in program offer youth a place to learn, grow and prosper. Our Club locations are not just hang-outs, but places where young people can learn, do homework, utilize technology, express themselves through the arts, play, develop social skills, participate in athletics, give back to the community and engage in meaningful conversations with caring adults.

All Club members that attend the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Nashua are encouraged to complete their homework after school. Club staff and volunteers work hard to provide them with all the tools they need to complete their schoolwork; school supplies, a quiet place and eager adults ready to help them process and problem solve. Club members, ages 8-18, are in need of high school students or adults who are willing to take the time to help them get their homework done. For more information, visit www.volunteergreaternashua.org and search for “Homework Helper” or “Boys & Girls Club of Greater Nashua.”

The Front Door Agency

The Front Door Agency has been serving the needs of Greater Nashua for 30 years. Their mission is to offer support and provide services to assist individuals and families transition from crisis to self-sufficiency. Their goal is to address the root causes of poverty through education and support.

They offer tools and resources for individuals and families in crisis so they can return to self-sufficiency. Their core programs focus on homelessness prevention and include transitional housing for single mothers and their children, security deposit loans and assistance with back rent and utilities.

They have a need for Spanish speaking translators for their holiday registration dates (Oct 22 from 3-6 p.m.; Oct 25 from 9 a.m. to noon; Oct 30 from 3-6 p.m.; and Nov 4 from 3-6 p.m.). They also periodically need drivers to help pick up gifts at different locations in the city during the month of December. In addition, volunteers are needed for their gift delivery date at the Courtyard Marriot on Dec. 15 (two shifts) 9-11 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and Monday, Dec. 16 (three shifts) 8-11 a.m.; 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; and 2-5:30 p.m. For more information, visit www.volunteergreaternashua.org and search for “The Front Door Agency.”

Family Promise of Southern New Hampshire

Family Promise of Southern New Hampshire is a transitional housing facility for families currently experiencing homelessness. For the past 14 years, they have been providing families with a safe and supportive place to get back on their feet while teaching them essential life skills to ensure future success. They are looking for volunteers in the following areas:

Meal-serving volunteers are responsible for making sure that dinner makes it to the table. They serve an evening meal Monday through Thursday and are there to help get the food from the oven to the table. Dinners are served buffet style and volunteers are encouraged to spend time with families getting to know the people they’re helping. Hours are 5-7 p.m.

Evening volunteers are responsible for making sure the house is safe and calm before the end of the day. They walk through the house, closing the blinds, they turn on the hallway lights and they babysit little ones before bed time so that parents can do their chores. Hours are 7-9 p.m.

Weekend volunteers are there to accept donations on Family Promise’s behalf and make sure that emergency situations are properly handled, should they arise. Sometimes, their weekend volunteers babysit while parents do chores or help by tidying up around the house. Hours are anytime between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. For more information, visit www.volunteergreaternashua.org and search for “Family Promise of Southern New Hampshire.”
