Daniel Richardson | Former alderman says he is the most convervative choice.

By Staff | Nov 1, 2015

Voters’ choices will soon set the city’s course for the next four years. To represent Nashua citizens and deliver successful city works, I offer my service as alderman-at-large.

Several features attracted me and caused me to choose Nashua as my home. I was impressed by the downtown foot traffic, traditional neighborhoods, medical care, beautiful green spaces, stable local employers and reasonable commute to my Mass. employer. In 2005, I sought public service and became the Ward 3 alderman. My intent was to preserve Nashua’s attractive features and maintain city services.

My colleagues and I were fiscally responsible, able to curb wasteful spending and stayed within the spending cap. Our city services continued without interruption. Our fixed income seniors and low-wage earners continued to afford living in Nashua. We listened to citizens’ concerns about high taxes and supported a 3.5 percent budget decrease. With responsible planning, a true emergency should be the only cause of a spending cap override.

Since then, some of Nashua’s attractive qualities have been eroding. The city’s economic development attracted few employers offering livable-wage jobs. The high number of business failures in downtown is alarming. Property taxes and spending have increased, while joblessness and static Social Security checks have cut residents’ ability to pay taxes.

As alderman-at-large, I want to Nashua to be attractive, prosperous, affordable and safe for all citizens of Nashua. Unlike those who seem to represent special interests, I do not accept money from, nor have financial interest in, any special interest that could uniquely benefit from my vote. I have no family on the city payroll and no conflict of interest.

Nashua’s future prosperity could blossom with relief of east-west travel bottleneck between our downtown and Hudson. I will work with the new mayor to streamline bridge traffic as described in the "East Hollis Street Plan". Manufacturers need ease of east-west transportation of goods. Relocating here should be attractive to business. These could bring jobs that generate disposable cash to infuse locally in the downtown.

I will work with the mayor on an intelligent approach to reduce city government’s physical footprint. Consolidating municipal departments together at Burke Street should result in cost efficiencies. Selling excess city properties would put more property on tax rolls.

Democracy requires that the public is informed and involved, not just a censored bystander. I was distressed by a sitting aldermen-at-large attempting to silence citizens, maligning an alderman as "vindictive" and defaming another alderman in his absence. An alderman-at-large characterizing our VFW citizens as "drunkenness, drunk driving, disorderly conduct" is unacceptable. I respect the dignity of all citizens.

I am the most fiscally responsible candidate for alderman-at-large. My website is www.richardson4alderman.com. I have the drive to engage in solving the problems facing Nashua. I am versed in the city charter, ordinances, parliamentary rules, state laws and the history of issues. Vote only for me to increase fiscal prudence on the board. There are four candidates on the ballot, but I am you best choice if you want your voice represented.
