Soldiers deserve better at home

By Staff | Dec 3, 2015

"Soldier commits suicide after surviving 3 tours in Iraq." These are the headlines we read about quite too often.

Here in New Hampshire, for every 100,000 troops, 29 of them commit suicide annually (Tracking Veterans Suicides – News21).

Soldiers commit suicide from PTSD that could have been prevented if they had the support, but we still do not have the proper resources for these individuals.

"The annual cost to society of anxiety disorders is estimated to be significantly over $42.3 billion, often due to misdiagnoses and under treatment." (PTSD Statistics, 2013).

Soldiers who survive the unimaginable struggles of combat overseas are dying when they come home to a country that they fight for every single day. Yes, there is the Veteran’s Association, but have you ever talked to a soldier who has attended one?

They feel pushed to the side like their problems do not matter and they suffer more as time goes on. We need to take a stand and provide the right funding and resources for our troops.

A soldier who can survive three tours in Iraq should not come home and commit suicide because the country that they serve and protect cannot provide the same services in return. Services and financial help need to be provided for our troops that need the help the most.
