Israel is not being disloyal to the US

In response to K.V. Sastry’s letter (Aug. 12), a few observations:

Israel is not being "disloyal" to the United States in opposing the Iran nuclear deal. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu owes loyalty only to the Israeli people. He is responsible for their safety and to protect their national security.

Mr. Sastry fails to mention that the Iranian regime has explicitly threatened to destroy Israel. He is clearly mistaken when he states that Mr. Netanyahu is "driving the U.S. to go to war with Iran for him." I would remind Mr. Sastry that since the founding of the state of Israel in 1948, the Israelis have never requested American combat assistance. Israel has always fought its own wars.

Iran is the leading sponsor of state terrorism in the Middle East, and by contrast Israel is the only true democracy in the region. The nuclear agreement with Iran is a bad deal for the United States and for Israel.
