Editorial on guns was naive and misguided

Can your guest editorial on gun control (July 27) be any more naive and misguided? Even if the "gun lobby" (which you seem to blame for recent mass shootings) and the demonized National Rifle Association didn’t exist, we’d still have mass killings like Sandy Hook, Chattanooga, Fort Hood, and the Colorado theater and Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church massacres.

So, instead of stricter gun laws and background checks, let’s just make guns totally illegal. Outlaw them. It worked so well for prohibition. And it’s working so well in the war on illegal drugs. Chicago, the city with the strictest gun laws in the country, has the highest murder rate in the country. If "Officials don’t know why Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez … started killing," as the editorial states, or won’t say, most Americans with an ounce of common sense do. He was a Muslim terrorist bent on killing Americans, as was Major Nadal Hassan at Fort Hood, as were the Tsarnaev brothers in the Boston Marathon bombings. However, in the Tsarnaev’s case, we can’t outlaw pressure cookers or blame the gun lobby. Adam Lanza, the Sandy Hook shooter, and Dylann Roof, the AME Church killer, clearly had mental health issues for which they didn’t receive help. However, it’s much easier and convenient to outlaw a politically incorrect relic than to actually give people meaningful, complex help.
