Tax cap is arbitrary and short-sighted

By Staff | Jul 20, 2015

My wife and I moved to Nashua from Manchester in 1971. We bought a house here in 1975 (where we live today) and raised our three children here. We are retired seniors now living on a fixed income so we are sensitive to inflationary pressures. But I have some concerns regarding the course that our state and city are taking in apportioning our tax revenues.

I do not wish to see or encourage wasteful spending but young couples with families do not move to communities with substandard school systems, high crime rates and deteriorating infrastructures.

Our State Legislature giving tax breaks to out of state businesses to attract them to move to New Hampshire is all well and good but they are not coming if there aren’t any qualified workers to fill the positions.

I want to see my tax rate go down but not because we had to pink slip a school teacher, eliminated a principal, not hire another police officer or fireman or repair our roads.

Arbitrary tax caps can be short-sighted. They never lower the tax rate but they can lower the tax base. Sometimes you really do have to spend it to make it and if that hurts me a little now I believe it will pay off in the future.

I would very much like to see our current mayoral candidates respond.
