Nashua Historical Society is in a state of disgrace

By Staff | Oct 3, 2013

I was dismayed to read the latest news regarding the Nashua Historical Society.

The society is a nonprofit organization which exists solely for the benefit of Nashua citizens and its historical artifacts, not the benefit of its elected officials. However, the fact that 18 members of the NHS had to band together and initiate proceedings with the courts this past week just to get the current governance of the NHS to improve itself and perform its sworn duties speaks volumes about the cloaked and private club that the society has become.

One person who has tried from the heart to breathe new life and vigor into the society is Terry Romano, and she has received nothing but flak as a result. What Ms. Romano wants and is properly seeking is transparency and accountability of the organization, but the environment became toxic from the moment she began to ask for those things as the newly-elected president.

I have known Terry for many years and I can say unequivocally that she is a person of impeccable character. I have also witnessed firsthand the way the NHS has been run, and I can say with equal unambiguity that it is in dire need of improvement.

Nashua citizens who care about preserving its rich past and antiquities need to join the NHS and become involved, and existing members of the Nashua Historical Society need to show up, pay attention and vote in person for candidates who offer plans for openness and improvement.
