Greeley Park should be for everyone

By Staff | Oct 2, 2013

Having taken my children to play at Greeley Park for the last 12 years, it’s not busy and the equipment is old. I hear people say “this park is a gem and it needs to be protected.”

Protected from what or whom? I am disgusted with the excuses offered by the NIMBY’s who suggest that Labine Park on the Cleveland Street cut-through corner, or Sargent Avenue, near the road, would be less stimulating to a child with autism or sensory issues than being set back hundreds of feet in Greeley. It’s just the latest excuse. When that was solved, the neighbors had different excuses as to why it can’t be done. I’m sure they’ll have more when the next one is refuted.

I believe this is nothing more than another instance of the Greeley abutter snobs resenting people from outside their neighborhood using this park, and politicians up for re-election using scare tactics. Shame on you. This park is for everyone to use; it isn’t just your backyard. If this is a “gem,” then it should be valued and cared for and new equipment is sorely needed. Whatever is put in, regardless of who picks up the tab, must be accessible. To say that it “needs to be done, but not donated” is ridiculous, and it leads to another conclusion: Why should I pay for something that is being offered to us? Knock it off; this park belongs to all of us.
