Discrimination must end against jobless

By Staff | May 15, 2013

I’m writing to ask people to support House Bill 350 by letting members of the House Labor Committee know you’re following the bill and care about it.

HB 350 will prohibit discrimination against the unemployed, specifically barring employers from screening out those who are currently unemployed. I have had the experience of being both unemployed and underemployed at various times over the past decade. As a mother, I cannot tell you the agony that causes in a household when you’re constantly worried about bills and making sure your children have the kind of life you wish for them.

It made me furious when I would spend time looking for jobs only to see a growing number of companies posting things that discouraged people from applying if they were currently unemployed. How many of us have the luxury of looking for another job while we still have one? It is far more common for someone to be in need of a job rather than giving it idle interest. But the number of job listings on Craigslist that used lines like this were extremely discouraging.

Unemployed workers aren’t looking for hand-outs. Many of us want to be working. HB 350 would give us a fair chance by prohibiting this type of discrimination. Please call the committee and tell them to support it.
