Senate should back ‘stand-ground’ repeal

By Staff | Apr 11, 2013

A massive misinformation campaign is being waged by forces outside New Hampshire to distort our representative democracy.

Know the facts about HB 135 and then contact your local senator to urge him or her to vote in favor of this common-sense law.

HB 135 rolls back dangerous and unnecessary changes to state law that were enacted under tea party pressure two years ago. It restores the duty to retreat when in a public place if you feel you are in a life-threatening situation, but only if you believe it is safe to do so.

The bill does not interfere with your right of self-defense in public, and it has nothing to do with using a gun in your own home.

It does take away a reckless inducement to “shoot first and ask questions later,” and legal cover some criminals have tried to use to escape conviction.

Solid research has shown these “stand your ground laws” – like what was added to statutes that had worked here 34 years – not only don’t deter crime, but have led to increased homicides. They make the places where we work and our children play less safe.

Show these outside groups we understand the needs of our own state and are not going to be stampeded by scare campaigns.

HB 135 is reasonable, thoughtful legislation passed by the House of Representatives and should be approved by the Senate. That is the New Hampshire way.

Tell your senator to vote “yes” on HB 135.
