Why is GOP against background checks?

By Staff | Mar 2, 2013

We all know that access to guns is only part of the problem when it comes to gun violence, but that doesn’t mean we should do nothing.

Making universal background checks law just makes sense, yet Republicans threaten to block this legislation, which only would make our country safer for every American. We are seeing some bad behavior at the state level as well.

Rep. J.R. Hoell, R-Dunbarton, believes that universal background checks will not stop mass shootings and that we should pass legislation that will allow teachers to carry weapons instead.

On Feb. 11, on New Hampshire Public Radio, Hoell said, “Gun laws aren’t part of the problem; gun-free zones are part of the problem.”

To suggest that teachers should carry weapons is so outrageous it calls his judgment into question.

Hoell has gone so far as to sponsor legislation that would repeal the licensing requirement to carry a concealed weapon in New Hampshire.

This is tantamount to a 2-year-old having a tantrum, and the good people of Dunbarton should put Hoell in a much-needed timeout.

We, the residents of New Hampshire, should be dominating the debate on universal background checks, not the politicians. Have your voice heard and contact you elected officials.
