Don’t blame gun laws for Aurora shootings

Jens Rieckmann claims in his July 25 letter that gun laws enabled the Colorado shootings. How absurd.

Committing murder is against the law. Has this law put an end to murder?

There are laws against drinking and driving. Has this law put an end to people being killed by drunken drivers?

There are laws against flying a passenger aircraft without an Airline Transport Pilot License. Did this stop terrorists from ramming two aircraft into the World Trade Center buildings and another into the Pentagon?

Using his line of thinking, not only should we take away guns, we should take all vehicles off the road and all aircraft out of the skies.

Gun laws are a placebo. Russia has the strictest gun laws in the world. It also has the highest murder rate per capita in the world. How do gun control advocates explain that?

One person with a concealed carry permit could have quickly ended the massacre in Aurora. The same can be said of Virginia Tech, Columbine, Luby’s and other places where mass murders have occurred.

It’s time to stop blaming the laws, guns, cars, knives, wood chippers and any other tool criminals use to commit their heinous crimes. They are nothing more than an object. Take away the object, and criminals simply will replace them with something else, and crime will continue.

Armed citizens are the only true deterrent. Take away a criminal’s confidence, and crime will drop.

Wishful thinking? FBI statistics show otherwise.
