Letter misses the point about self-help

Letter to the Editor

In regard to Ray Guarino’s letter (Aug. 22), does Mr. Guarino know that the South was traditionally a Democratic hotbed for racism? This did not change until the 1960s. The writer then states that “progressives” are re-enfranchising the minorities through voter registration. This is all well and good, but he misses the point. I have been poor. I have picked cans. I have gone without meals. I have been cold. I have survived cancer while on $300 a week unemployment. What helped me? Myself. I picked myself up and did something about it. Apparently only Republicans are racist. Republicans are the only wealthy ones.

George Stephanopoulos created the Republican “war on women” and some buy it. Yet, female White House staffers are paid 87 cents for every dollar a male is paid. You need an ID for a job, to rent a car, buy booze, get a hotel, board an airplane or enter a federal building. But the poor can’t get an ID? Of course they can. I suggest Mr. Guarino read Jason Reilly’s book, “Stop Helping Us” for real answers. ...
