Why he never votes Republican

Letter to the Editor

As the Republican Party continues to be dominated by right wing neo-conservative reactionaries, and as they continue to dismantle the Voting Rights Act, Americans can expect more rioting and civil unrest as we have seen in Fergurson, Missouri.

Our American-style democracy of self-rule has failed miserably in Ferguson, as the people of that community have been disenfranchised. This disenfranchisement of minority communities happens throughout our country. Instead of having an adult conversation regarding race relations, Republicans are giving us fractured fairy tales about the “race lobby” and the “race card.” On the other hand, progressives have acknowledged the root cause of the problem and have begun the process of re-enfranchising the minority population through a voter registration drive in Ferguson. The basic problem is that despite an overwhelming number of black Americans residing in Ferguson, the police department and Ferguson City Hall are dominated by white people. People in control of government are not from the neighborhoods that they control, which goes against the American promise of self-government. The Republican party, the party that supposedly cherishes liberty, refuses to take any positive steps to ensure the liberty of people of color. In fact, they do everything they can to prevent minorities from voting by passing voter ID laws and instituting voter roll purges. This is one of the main reasons I never vote Republican, and in November I urge my fellow voters to do the same. ...
