Pundits miss point on Ferguson shooting

Letter to the Editor

Feguson is one tough situation. It is a perfect example of a cynic’s view of why we have police departments: Police in America exist to protect whites from African Americans and to protect the rich from the poor. This, of course, is not entirely true, but situations like the one playing out in Ferguson, Mo., certainly make for interesting conversation.

Bill O’Reilly on FOX News asked the police chief in Ferguson if he thought the protesters were outsiders who had come to his town to start trouble. He implied that the town would not have had the trouble it has endured if these “agitators” had not come to town. I wonder if O’Reilly would have supported Bull Connor in Birmingham in the early 1960s, when he ordered his department to back off from protecting the Freedom Riders who were protesting segregation on interstate buses. That non-action resulted in the assault on the Freedom Riders by thugs. Connor stated that they were outside agitators and had no right to be in Birmingham. ...

Joe Scarborough on MSNBC stated that the two reporters who were arrested by the Ferguson Police Department could have avoided the confrontation by just doing what the police told them to do.

I suppose that Michael Brown would be alive today if he would have had only done what the white officer had insisted he do. When he didn’t, the officer felt it necessary to fire his gun 10 times and kill him.

Bill O’Reilly and Joe Scarborough just don’t get it.
