Veterans deserve better than Jackson

White House physician Adm. Ronny Jackson has withdrawn from contention as the new head of the Department of Veterans Affairs. He continues to insist allegations about his character are false.

Perhaps, perhaps not. Sterling character should be a prerequisite for the VA secretary post.

But Jackson, nominated by President Donald Trump, had pledged to be a true reformer at the VA – in contrast to those who have made similar, hollow pledges in the past.

No doubt the VA establishment considers Jackson’s withdrawal a victory. Trump should not allow that segment of the Washington “swamp” to prevail.

His next nominee – vetted thoroughly – should be the honest, dedicated reformer the nation’s veterans need to whip the agency meant to serve them back into shape.
