NH’s generous spirit refreshing
One in nine. Every year, the New Hampshire Food Bank reports one in nine Granite Staters are food insecure. Every year we hear that number includes more than 41,300 children.
Fortunately, every year New Hampshire residents do something about it by reaching into their wallets and pantries each holiday season to generate meals for the food bank.
More than 1 million meals were raised through a combination of monetary and food donations to the food bank, part of the Catholic Charities New Hampshire. The food bank reported donations for its WMUR Spirit of Giving Food Drive jumped 30 percent from the previous year and included an anonymous $100,000 matching grant from a private foundation to raise more than $448,000.
But it’s not all about the cash – donors gave 194,540 pounds of food as well. These charitable acts will feed approximately 139,730 people who are food insecure throughout the state, meaning they do not know where their next meal is coming from.
In total, the food drive reported it has generated more than 2 million meals in the last three years.
These are refreshing figures.
It is good to see Granite Staters’ generous spirit during the holiday season, and we applaud each and every individual, family or business who stepped up and donated to help ensure our needy neighbors don’t go hungry.
