The tragic consequences of bicycling without a helmet

A 58-year-old bicyclist died this week after a driver opened the door of his legally-parked car into the bicyclist’s path on Main Street in Durham. The bicyclist struck the car door and was catapulted several feet forward onto the street. He suffered massive head injuries and never regained consciousness.

Authorities described it as a tragic accident. The man was riding in a designated bike path and the driver just didn’t notice him before opening the door. No charges are pending. ...

Authorities described it as a tragic accident. The man was riding in a designated bike path and the driver just didn’t notice him before opening the door. No charges are pending.

Sadly, the victim was not wearing a helmet.

There is, of course, no way to know if a helmet would have saved the man’s life, but it’s reasonable to believe that doing so would have at least improved his chances.

We witness bicyclists riding without helmets far too often. The shame is they themselves in a tragic position where, even if an accident isn’t their fault, they still end up dead.
