Laurence Landry

Laurence J. Landry, 93, of N. Sandwich, passed away on Monday, January 23, 2012, surrounded by his three loving daughters at their home in VA. Born in Conway, NH on August 28, 1918, he was the last of four children of Wilfred J. and Mary (Conway) Landry. He was raised in Conway, graduating from Kennett High School, class of ’37. Laurence worked in the Conway area until joining the Army Air Corps in 1941; he was assigned to the 2nd Fighter Squadron, 52nd Fighter Group and was stationed in North Africa and Italy. Upon returning to the US, he joined the NH Motor Vehicle Dept., Nashua, in 1946, a year later he married his beloved wife, Barbara Hallowell, of Conway. Six months after their marriage he and Barbara lost everything when their apartment in Amherst, known as Cushing’s Folly burned. The young couple never forgot the generous citizens of Amherst who rallied to provide them with clothes, furniture and a place to live. Laurence joined the NH State Police in 1962 when it became a division of the newly developed NH Department of Safety; he was assigned to the southern tier. From 1963 to 1969 he was assigned to then Gov. John W. King, escorting him to state and national events. Laurence retired from the NH Department of Safety in 1973 as a Lieutenant, his last assignment with the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division, he was very proud of his 28 years of service to the state. After his retirement he worked briefly for F&S Transit, Hudson Limousine, and the Amherst School District as a bus driver. In 1991, Laurence and his wife moved to their summer home in N. Sandwich, where he enjoyed his interests: steam boating, motorcycling, and working in the yard. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Barbara, and brother, Thomas Gerald Landry.Laurence is survived by his three daughters, Kyle Langille and husband Bill, of Amherst, Drs. Shauna and Gary Spurlock, of Lovettsville, VA, and Lauri Scharankov and husband George, of NYC; brother, Leo J. Landry, of Sacramento, CA; sister, Loretta L. Kenison, of Concord, NH; five grandchildren, Christopher Langille and fiancé Kimberley Glover, of Marlborough, NH, Kimberly (Langille) Burke and Shawn Burke, of Milford, NH, Stephen Spurlock, of Athens, GA, Kaitlin Spurlock, of Lovettsville, VA, and Lucas Scharankov, of NYC, as well as his faithful dog Lilly. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, of Meredith, on Friday, May 25, 2012 at 10:00 am. The Very Rev. Dennis J. Audet, V.F., Pastor, will officiate. Interment will follow at Quaker Cemetery, N. Sandwich, NH. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Laurence’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society.
