Richard served honorably in the US Air Force for 23 years as a Radio Technician and retired at the rank of Master Sergeant. While on active duty, he received his Bachelor’s degree from SUNY in Electrical Engineering and continued to work as an Electrical Engineer for another decade in Bedford, MA.
He grew up on a family goat farm in Modesto, California and enlisted in 1957. During his military service, he traveled extensively. His young family was stationed at Aviano Air Force Base in Italy, Hill AFB in Utah, Croughton AFB in England and Griffiss AFB in Rome, NY. Additionally, he spent a year each in remote tours in Korea, Greece, Turkey and Greenland. After his retirement, he settled in New Hampshire, where he gave himself the nickname “Yankee Dreamer,” referencing both Yankee ingenuity and the Flying Yankee, diesel-electric-train. He was a lover of trains, a proud New Englander and a do-it-yourselfer. In his spare time, Richard devoted considerable time to lobbying New Hampshire towns to support a commuter rail to Boston.
Remembrance hours are scheduled at Davis Funeral Home in Nashua, NH for Wednesday, February 13, 2019 (5-7pm; Eulogy @ 6:30pm). Interment will take place at a later time. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in Richard’s memory to the National Association of American Veterans, www.naavets.org.
