Jean P. McNally

Athol, MA – Jean P. McNally, 80, passed away on November 19 at her home in Athol, MA following five months of health challenges. She was the daughter of the late Frederick J. and Marion. R. McNally of Portland, Maine.

Ms. McNally was born on February 27, 1938 in Portland where she attended public schools. She graduated with high honors from Deering High School in 1956 and magna cum laude from the University of New Hampshire in 1964, majoring in English Literature and Education. While at UNH, she was elected to Phi Kappa Phi, the honor society for educators, to Phi Beta Kappa and to Phi Mu Sorority. She was also one of 13 students elected to Mortar Board, the Senior Women’s Honor Society, for outstanding achievement to the University in leadership, scholarship and service. She was a member of numerous professional organizations throughout her career including the American Association of University Women and National Association of Female Executives and the Phi Beta Kappa Society. Jean actively supported many organizations dear to her: World Wild Life Fund, National Parks Conservation Association, and several health and Native American associations.

Jean was one of the first women branch managers of the former Casco Bank and Trust Co. in Portland and was a Business Services Manager for New England Telephone (now Verizon), Manchester, NH before she began working in the non-profit sector. She was Associate Executive Director of the Nashua, NH YWCA, for 15 years before becoming Business Manager for Mt. St. Mary High School in Nashua for 6 years.

Ms. McNally remarried in 1991 and moved to Athol, MA where she became the Business & Human Resource Manager for the YMCA in Greenfield. She later was Business Manager of Temple Emanuel, Worcester, MA, before returning to the Greenfield Y until her retirement in June, 2009. After retirement she volunteered at Franklin County Home Care Corp. (now LifePath). She was a member of the Friends of the Athol Council on Aging, Mt. Grace AARP Chapter #3673, and Athol Golden Age Club where she served as President and coordinator of trips for area seniors.

Jean enjoyed skiing for many years, and swimming, dancing, musical theater productions all her life; time spent on the Pine Point, Scarborough ME, and Santa Monica, CA beaches, and travelling to California and western US and Canadian National Parks, especially the Grand Tetons, WY. She travelled extensively throughout Europe with her husband and student groups for several years.

She is survived by her husband, Raymond O. Dufort, of Athol; two sons, Magnus Monroe, of Athol; Christopher C. Keith, of Cornelia, GA; her sister, Marion M. McNally and husband, William Phillips, of Limington, ME; her brother, Courtney R. Sargent and his wife, Pemmie of Myrtle Beach, SC; two nephews, Courtney R. Sargent, Jr. and Robert Sargent, one niece, Kate Sargent Gunter and several great nieces, nephews and McNally cousins.

Visiting hours celebrating Jean’s life will be held on Wednesday, November 28 from 5-7 P.M. at the Conroy Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Prayers will be recited at the Funeral Home on Thursday, November 29 at 9:30 A.M. followed by an 11:00 A.M. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph’s Church, 673 Stevens Avenue, Portland. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Portland. A Memorial Service will be held in her home town of Athol, MA at a later date to accommodate the senior citizens she served.
