John Robert Petersen
November 27, 1929 - March 5, 2018
John was born the son of Robert and Marjorie (Neville) Petersen in Billerica, MA where he grew through his formidable years. John met and married his beloved wife Dorothy (Hammond) Petersen while enlisted in the US Air Force and serving in the Korean War. ÃÂ Upon his discharge he and Dorothy carved out a life for themselves in Nashua, NH for the next 60 plus years. John had a long career with Bell Systems, where he did everything from line installation and service calls in his early years, later advancing to working on PBX communication systems at the FAA center in Nashua. He retired from Bell Systems in 1985. Being a perpetual “putterer” who couldn’t sit still, John took on a second career installing security systems for a small company in Nashua. As a testament to his character, when he should have been taking it a little easier, he again demonstrated his work ethic by out-working his substantially younger counterparts for the next 10 years.
In his personal life John was just as driven. He was always willing to share his knowledge with family and friends, and taught his children the importance of staying connected to the simple things in life. As an avid sportsman and hunter, he taught his children to hunt and where to pick his favorite wild blueberries at the “Camp.” John was always willing to use his skills and knowledge as an electrician to help anyone in need, with never a task too daunting for him to tackle. One of his proudest accomplishments in retirement was building a horse barn for son Carl and wife Martha. Following his second retirement, John very much enjoyed daily walks with close friends and his canine companions Chelsea and Lady Jasmine. In his later years he loved to tell the stories of the good times. Reminiscing about the people that ebbed and flowed through his life always brought a smile to his face. He will be truly missed.
John is survived by his most loving wife of 66 years Dorothy, five loving children and their spouses; Robert & Mary Petersen of Hertford NC, David & Michele Petersen of New Boston NH, Carl & Martha Petersen of Weare NH, daughter Linda & husband Jim Lombardo of Exeter NH and Paul & Dorlisa Petersen of Highland MI. He leaves eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren set to carry the family legacy into the future. He was preceded in death by his sister Carol (Neville) Breyer and great grandson Henry Petersen. John passed peacefully the afternoon of March 5, 2018 surrounded by his wife and all of his children. There will be a small private service held at the New Hampshire Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boscawen NH.
